Changes launch party at Smart Bar with Hunee!

CHANGES: A New Year In A New Home

Well, it’s been a while. Some would say too long. I would say just right, as good things come to those who wait. And this good “thing” is a new home.

Changes is growing up and moving on to bigger and better things. After our hiatus, we are moving to the legendary Smart Bar for a new quarterly party, the first of which is Friday, January 31, 2014.

Changes may be “changing” (ha), but the concept is still the same: an approachable party with a focus on vinyl mixing and a nod to its Chicago roots. The Midnight toast and disco dedication lives on!

The launch party will feature Hunee, Samone, and Shazam Bangles.

HUNEE
Rush Hour / Future Times / W.T.

We’ve had our eye on Hunee for a while. As a DJ he is passionate and fearless as he travels through time from disco to acid house and beyond. The Berlin-based, Korean born producer has roots in Rap music but is known for his deep percussion and disco laced productions on labels like Ostgut Ton, Permanent Vacation, and Rush Hour for starters. I’ll end with this quote from HAHA Industries Australia: “Generally, I like the human element of dj-ing: risks, fuckups, surprises, sweat. I prefer tracks from the other side of the cliched formula. Or maybe I just prefer another formula… I have an idea of a certain functional sound aesthetic, these are sounds, I try to stay away from. And well, naturally, I call on the sounds that drive me crazy!” Sounds good, Hunee. We can’t wait to see what you bring to the floor for Changes.

SAMONE
Changes / Hugo Ball

Vinyl selector from and residing in Chicago. Creator of Changes Chicago. Hugo Ball resident at Smart Bar.

SHAZAM BANGLES
Boogie Musters / Peach Creepers

Beat-matching, cutting, DJ extraordinaire.

About Changes:

Changes is a Chicago event and label that serves as a bastion for roots dance music and DJ culture. We celebrate the medium; the beatification of the beat. The sundy set of unrelenting party goers at Changes takes the bacchanalian dance floor as seriously as the music. Changes loves house, disco, industrial, Italo, the list goes on. We have no temporal bias. Our civic pride compels us to represent the hedonistic and eclectic bent of Chicago’s most beloved esoteric mixing traditions. Changes DJs are real turntablists: alchemic artists behind the decks. Guest selectors include: Kon, Zernell Gillie, Studio Casual, The Black Madonna, Chicago Skyway, DJ Spun, Specter, Jamie 3:26, Justin Long, Marlon Montez, Tyrel Williams, Ross Kelly, ShredOne and Sassmouth. Samone Roberts and Nathan Drew Larsen host Changes.

Midnight toast when we light the disco ball.

Changes with DJ Kon

Changes with DJ Kon, Shred One, and Samone

CHANGES is proud to present a very special guest:

KON (Boston)
BBE / Future Classic / Soul Clap Records

We are having a very special guest next Friday. As fans for quite a while now, we must say that there are very few DJ mixes that make their way into heavy rotation as long as the "On Track" and "Off Track" compilation did in the car, at the house, etc etc. Changes is bubbling with anticipation for this week's party featuring Boston's own DJ Kon. Known for his work on the above mentioned BBE comps, and various other projects, as well as releases on Soul Clap Records and Future Classic. Can't wait to see what he has in store!

Kon has been digging in crates since 1976, DJing since 1985, and spinning in clubs since 1991. He is one half of Kon and Amir, who released the acclaimed “On Track” and “Off Track” series on BBE Records where they introduced rare grooves to a new audience. His remixes of dance classics prompted Gilles Peterson to name him “Edit/rework King of 2011”, and feature him prominently on his BBC Radio shows.

Kon takes a more modest approach, noting that Kon is an acronym for “King of Nothing” amongst others, and seeks to place the love of music above his own work. The last of an increasingly rare breed of dedicated crate diggers, Kon has for years brought his deep knowledge of obscure goodies to clubs and festivals worldwide. He has also spread his gospel to the masses through critically heralded releases on such respected imprints as BBE, Rawkus, and Fondle Em. Beyond collecting vinyl and re-editing classics, he has been part of Boston’s Hip-Hop community for nearly 30 years, and has preserved the development of it as a true culturist. Most people know him as just a DJ, but he has history as a writer, music producer, and bboy.

CHANGES

Friday December 7th:

Zernell Gillie of Grimy! Edits (Los Angeles, USA)

Changes is excited to have Chicago native Zernell Gillie as our December guest! Zernell's style can range from the heart of disco to the soul of Chicago house music with a grimy twist. By taking rare disco classics and stripping them down and rebuilding them to a beating perfection it's no wonder why his imprint Grimy, has sold thousands of copies worldwide. His musical savvy and hard work pushing his sound and disco/house culture is definitely paying off.

Zernell was born in Chicago and started DJing at the age of 14. This was during the early years of house music and like a lot of Chicago teens he religiously listened to the Hot Mix 5 on WBMX . By 1986 most of his friends where into the Disco/House music culture and his best friend the infamous Mr. Gene Hunt was RON HARDY’s protégé. Zernell musically grew up in the Music Box listening to the sounds of Ron Hardy and was schooled by the master & protégé in the art of song selection and timing that drives dancers into a frenzy. Zernell’s Grimy style of music features some of the hottest and rarest disco songs and re-edits mixed just the right way to keep you dancing and wanting more, which has made Zernell one of the hottest dj’s in the underground disco scene today.

Zernell has done numerous parties including Chicago, Detroit, New York, Miami and LA.
He has toured the U.K. and Europe and headlined parties in London, Amsterdam & Berlin.
He has released frequent mixes on various websites such as Deep House Page and
Bring the Heat, which gained him attention & fans of music lovers across the globe.
Zernell’s love and passion for disco/house is as strong as it was in the 80’s and out of that passion Zernell created the disco edit label Grimy Edits, which have sold thousands of units worldwide.

Early set by The Black Madonna

The Black Madonna (Freerange, Home Taping is Killing Music, Stripped & Chewed)
“I live in Chicago, but I’m from the middle of nowhere.” Emerging with a sudden burst of releases sans the traditional slick promotional push, it sort of feels like The Black Madonna comes from nowhere indeed. On the topic she says, "I don't want to make pictures of myself and try to tell you who I am that way. It's a losing game, especially for women. The people I admire are Underground Resistance and other artists that stay idea centered. That isn't changing because I'm a woman. I’m patient enough to do this the right way. Hopefully the music is sufficient. It’s the only thing I’m interested in saying or being."
In fact, patience might be the singular quality that marks her more than any other. She apprenticed and did studio work for other producers for years before working alone. Her first record, "Exodus" was an anthem to a concentrated pool of Chicago house aficionados, passed person to person for three years before anyone outside of the city ever heard it. Indeed the master was almost deleted. “Exodus,” with its transcendent, gospel arrangements and thunderous crescendo, finally found its audience via the Stripped & Chewed label. Its champions range from the esteemed Little White Earbuds (calling it, “one of the most effective and joyful records I’ve danced to this year,”) to Derrick Carter, who debuted Exodus to the rest of the world on mainstage at Movement 2012. Of the surprise experience she says, “I was walking back to the hotel. It was like a miracle. I cried like a baby. I never thought it would see the light of day.”
And that’s the story of pretty much everything she’s done. Alone in the attic of the house that formerly contained the offices of over 50 Chicago dance labels, she produced the tracks that now comprise current and upcoming releases on Home Taping is Killing Music, Argot, Stripped and Chewed and File Under Disco (from the Disco Deviance family). But most collected dust for a year or more, before anyone heard them. She simply made them and put them aside. In fact, it was another close producer friend who took the liberty of sending out those initial dispatches and finally nudged her to submit the work to labels.
The result is now a matter of public record, as it were. She has since been remixed by The Revenge (forthcoming) and Nicholas, and her split with disco legend DJ Rahaan nearly sold out in a matter of days after hitting distribution. Support for those two releases alone included no less than Ashley Beedle, Dimitri From Paris, Jacques Renault, Luke Solomon, Derrick Carter, Jon Da Silva, Rob Mello, Bill Brewster, Rainer Trueby, 6th Borough Project, Tornado Wallace, Kiko Navarro, Social Disco Club, Medlar, Leftside Wobble, Murray Richardson, Xperience, Jimpster, Ka§par, Stu Clark, Frank Booker, Sleazy Beats Recordings and Gene Hunt. So, it's probably safe to say she’s got at least one foot out of the attic at this point, even if she’s digging the other heel in. And she’s spending more time with her first love, playing records. A sublime technician behind the decks, Madonna is known for fluent and dynamic all-vinyl appearances. Chicagoans were even treated to a special evening with The Black Madonna and Derrick Carter playing back to back sets, as she drew from her 6000 record deep record collection. At present, she is readying work on the second phase of an original disco project and finishing her first work on the Freerange label, while holding down the Funktion One at Chicago's famous finishing school for DJ's, Smart Bar.
Not bad for a producer who once refused to send her work to anyone at all. “Maybe they’ll even let me leave Chicago someday,” she jokes.

JAMIE 3:26 & PHIL STONE

JAMIE 3:26 (ParteHardy, Chicago)

http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/jamie326
http://soundcloud.com/jamie3too6
http://www.friedtofu.org/?p=5001

Hailing from the Beverly area on the South Side of Chicago, Jamie 3:26 has garnered recognition in his own right, and poised to unleash a barrage of hot music on the populous, Jamie 3:26 is fast becoming a music phenomenon. Driven by the desire to allow people to loose themselves on the floor and forget their problems, Jamie keeps his irons in the fire. He always seeks out new and fresh sounds. It could be a song from 30 years ago or a new jam, as long as it has a great groove, he's interested in it. When he plays, his main goal is to connect with the crowd. He feeds off of their energy. He has the uncanny ability to read a floor and switch the groove without losing them. Directing them to places he wants them to go is what sets him apart from many other DJ's. Over the last few years and with his releases of his Basement Edits series on both ParteHardy and Strobelight Honey Records, Jamie has seen much love from all over the world. Touring all around in Europe, Asia and even “Down Under” in Australia, Jamie’s heat is being felt globally. A true gentleman in the scene and connoisseur of fine music with a heart and soul from Chicago with the talent to know how to make people move is what sets Jamie apart from the rest of the crowd.

Phil Stone:

http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/phillipstone/biography

Phillip Stone comes from the outskirts of Chicago, where he had an early exposure to the infamous days of the Midwestern house and techno rave scene. He made an early name for himself by opening for world famous international artists in key downtown clubs, as well as playing at numerous underground loft and after-hours parties. His early influences came from the likes of Marco Carola, Carl Cox, Derrick Carter, Mazi, as well as many others. He was also an early riser to the minimal scene once he was exposed to Matthew Dear and others that contributed to the movement. Well before the blending of techno and house became par for the course, Phillip’s sets always drew influences from all corners of the dance music world. His sets range from deep house, techno, after-hours tunes, as well as tech-house.

What? Did you miss the last Changes with Tyrel and Shred One? THAT was the best rowdiest party to date. We managed to record some high fidelity audio for the night and will be posting early next week. We are looking forward to the next one on July 6th with Justin Long and David Yang!

Justin Long is one of the most creative DJs we have heard and his sound just feels like home (Chicago). He is a mastermind behind the decks and he actually moves his body while he does his thing. We are very excited to hear a Changes set from him. We know it will be on point and full of surprises!

David Yang is a vinyl purist and he's not afraid to own it. His deep and technically sexy sets oscillate between avant-garde and obscure. We are excited to see what David will dig up for us! The pun is definitely intended.

Changes, Changes, Changes...what can I say? Next up is the best from the West Coast: Tyrel Williams and Shred One.

TYREL WILLIAMS
Acid Test

Chicago native Tyrel Williams joins us on familiar turf with his authentic style. Tyrel is visiting us from San Fran but don't let his laid back demeanor throw you off. He delivers some serious beats for the dance floor so it's best to bring your A-game. Tyrel is a true house music warrior.

Tyrel has been a mainstay of Chicago’s underground House scene for years. He began mixing records in 1999. Soon later he landed a job at Gramaphone Records where he spent the last decade building a mighty collection of 12” dance records. He spent 2009-2011 building his Acid Test residency at Smart Bar, which is an ongoing all vinyl House / Techno weekly dedicated to the true art form of DJing. Guests have included Miles Maeda, IZ and DIZ, Derrick Carter, Tevo Howard, Traxx, and Justin Long. Tyrel has recently moved to San Francisco to take his DJing and producing to the next level.

SHRED ONE
Cherries Records/Maxx Traxx

Sheila aka Shred One, the West Coast boogie queen, rare vinyl digger, and creator of the ShrEDITS. We are honored to have her and she definitely rocks the party. You may have been to her infamous Maxx Traxx party or seen her clean up at a DJ battle or two.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Shred One was constantly surrounded and heavily influenced by music at a very young age as she tagged along with her vinyl collecting brothers. She moved to Brooklyn, NY in '98 where she began collecting her own records and fell in love with the art of deejaying, as well as learning the music industry game working at Rawkus Records and Blacksmith Management. She began spinning out when she moved back to Los Angeles in 2004 and has since played alongside cutting edge artists such as Daz-i-Kue, Dam Funk, 45 King, Talib Kweli, DJ Spinna, & Dj Jazzy Jeff. Now residing in Chicago, she has recently won the Vocalo Quest For The Best DJ competition becoming part of the prestigious radio collective. You can find her spinning boogie & modern funk every 1st Thursday at her residency MAXX TRAXX.

Changes May Edition!

Once again thank you Chicago. I honestly cannot express how amazing this night has been so far. SO much real talent and inspiring dance music. It's always a pleasure to see your happy glistening faces under the sparkle of the disco ball. If you missed the party, or you would just like to relive the moment, watch out for the podcast of live recorded material from Changes featuring Ross and Mantas. Now on to the next order of business. May 4th brings a night which is near and dear to my heart. "Sam 2 Sam" will be a night of back n' forth fun with records played by Sassmouth (Sam Kern) and myself, Samone (Sam Roberts). We have been toying with this idea for a minute and I am excited to see what my sister Sassmouth has in store.

Changes Friday May 4th Featuring...
SAM 2 SAM
Sassmouth & Samone
All Night Long

SASSMOUTH
NBFC/Hej
Sass is not only a DJ's DJ, but also a DJ for the masses. It doesn't matter if you know the track she is playing because she has a certain way of making you shake it regardless. And isn't that the name of the game? She is technically skilled and brings a lot of flavor to the mix. She's a Chicago favorite as well as many other places in the world for good reason. The language of great music is universal.
